E-Prescribing: Identity Proofing with ID.me

Last updated: October 30, 2026

Most clinicians verify their identity for controlled substance prescribing (EPCS) through Experian, following the steps in E-Prescribing: Identity Proofing & EPCS. If Experian can't verify you, or is temporarily unavailable, DrFirst may send you an ID.me identity proofing link instead.

Only use this article if you received an ID.me link from DrFirst or the Osmind support team. If you haven't tried the standard Experian process yet, start there. If you've been locked out after three failed Experian attempts, or you don't have enough credit history to pass, contact us at getsupport@osmind.org and we'll work with DrFirst on next steps.

What you'll need

  • A government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license or passport)

  • A smartphone with a camera

  • Access to the email address where you received your DrFirst invite

  • About 15–20 minutes without interruptions

Steps

  1. Open the ID.me link from your DrFirst email. Check your spam folder if you don't see it.

  2. Sign in to or create an ID.me account. If you already have an ID.me account (for example, from the IRS or VA), sign in with it.

  3. Verify your identity. Follow the on-screen prompts to photograph your ID and take a selfie. If automated verification doesn't work, ID.me may offer a video call with one of their agents to finish verifying you.

  4. Finish your EPCS setup in DrFirst. After ID.me confirms your identity, follow the prompts to set up your two-factor authentication token and create your passphrase. See steps 4–6 of E-Prescribing: Identity Proofing & EPCS for token fields and passphrase requirements.

  5. Complete Logical Access Control (LAC). This step requires help from your practice admin. Instructions are HERE.

  6. 🎉 You're done! Log out of Osmind and log back in to start prescribing controlled substances from the E-prescribing tab.

Troubleshooting

My ID.me link expired or doesn't work.
Contact us at getsupport@osmind.org and we'll request a new link from DrFirst.

ID.me couldn't verify me automatically.
Look for the option to verify with an ID.me agent by video call. If you don't see it, or the call doesn't resolve the issue, contact us.

Can Osmind complete ID.me for me?
No. Because ID.me is a secure identity verification process, only you can complete it. Our support team is happy to walk through every step with you live — email getsupport@osmind.org with a few times that work for you.
